THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME Produced: 1919 Description On the British Army. Reel 1, units move into trenches near Fricourt-Mametz. Troops march forward near Bray. French peasants tend artillery horses. Artillery shells are unloaded and an artillery barrage is laid down. Officers address the Lancashire Fusiliers. Troops attend religious services before the attack. Torpedoes, for wire clearing, are brought up. Reel 2, a terrific artillery bombardment pounds the German trenches. Troops fix bayonets and move through trenches. Royal Engrs. explode barbed wire and infantry advances. Wounded are carried from the battle field. Reel 3, Lancashires return with prisoners. Artillery pieces are moved over captured terrain. Roads are repaired. Shows ruins in Mametz; captured equipment; and troops in rest areas. Reel 4, Scottish troops wash and clean machine guns. Howitzers are pulled into advance positions. Dead British are carried to rear areas. Prisoners are searched. First aid is given wounded at Minden Post. German shells land in the area. Battle police round up Germans in no man's land.
