Film footage of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, by Roger Dumas [sometimes mistakenly spelt as 'Roger Dumes'], circa November–December 1927. A maharaja of a Punjabi princely-state accompanied Dumas on his trip to Amritsar. This is film footage/motion pictures, now usually known as "video". This original film reel was shot in black-and-white on 35 mm on nitrate film. Description of the scenes seen in the video: This film is the earliest motion picture capture of Sri Darbar Sahib (also known as the “Golden Temple” or so-called “Harmandir Sahib”) in Amritsar that I have discovered so far. This film footage was taken by Roger Dumas of The Archives of the Planet project [French: Les archives de la planète], a massive undertaking led by French banker Albert Kahn to document the world’s diverse cultures in picture before modernization & globalization permanently changed them forever. Roger Dumas, who captured images in Punjab between 1927-28, had been received by Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala & filmed much video there. This is Dumas’s film of Darbar Sahib in 1927 & it is breathtaking, giving us a small glimpse into what life was like in Amritsar at that time. The film starts out wit
