High winds and blowing snow pummel Laurel Street in Buffalo, New York, as seen from the second-floor balcony of a house on the evening of December 23, 2022, the first day of a three-day blizzard that, according to Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, proved "the worst storm in [the] community's history, surpassing the Blizzard of '77". Over four feet of snow fell at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport , with wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour generating whiteout conditions that grounded emergency vehicles and trapped in their cars those making ill-advised commutes.
