Thunder Rocks, Allegany State Park, New York - 20211110 - 03.webm

Open license

A November 2021 afternoon outing at Thunder Rocks at Allegany State Park, New York. This 360-million-year-old sedimentary deposit was shaped by the forces of erosion and frost wedging (and protected from obliteration by the absence of glaciers in the so-called "Salamanca Re-Entrant" during the last Ice Age, one of the few areas of New York State not covered by thick ice) into a "rock city" of scattered boulders, and is today a refuge for various rare species of flora that have otherwise been mostly extirpated from this region.
