Athletes from 52 nations led by the Greeks, originators of the games, enter the stadium. The last runner in a relay of youths who have carried a lighted torch from Athens, runs through the stadium to an altar where he lights the flame to officially open the games. Hilde Fleischer, a German girl, wins the women's javelin throw and breaks the world record. Cornelius Johnson of California wins the high jump, and Jesse Owens breaks world records in the 100 and 200 meter races. There follow slow-motion views of the discus throw, the finals of which were won by Kenneth Carpenter of California. Forrest Towns wins the 110-meter hurdles for the United States and secures America's ninth gold medal.
