Sea of Galilee, Golan
IN COPYRIGHT
From 1980 to 1995, the Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto photographed lakes and seas all over the world – among them the Black Sea, the Arctic Ocean, and the English Channel – foregrounding the intersection of water and sky. Captured by means of long exposure – up to three hours – the sought-after horizon line has been suffused with a delicate haziness that fuses space, time, and motion. In this photograph of the Sea of Galilee, traces of the wind blowing in both sky and water blur the distinctness of the sea, transforming the landscape into an infinite, empty entity. The resulting image is devoid of all hint as to the photographer's point of origin or the time when the picture was taken, inducing the illusion of a prolonged sojourn at sea.
