Necklace (mánage)

This heavy necklace, one kilogram in weight, is the work of Jewish silversmiths and was worn only by Jewish women . Similar necklaces appear on stone reliefs of the fourth century in India. The silver beads look rather like the berries that grow in Yemen and symbolize a sweet and fruitful life. Such beads were used in the jewelry of ancient Egypt and can also be found in the jewelry in Persia and Bukhara.
