Ivan Maisky was the Soviet ambassador to England in 1938 when he visited Epstein's studio. The ambassador and his wife were smitten with Epstein's Madonna and Child and thought the Soviets wouldbe interested in the sculpture, though this idea never came to fruition. Epstein portrays Maisky as a genial personality with a round, smiling face.
