This experimental portrait of a typical British soldier of World War I incorporates a ready-made object - a helmet. Along with a bust of an American soldier, The Tin Hat may have been intended to prove Epstein's suitability as an Official War Artist. However, despite his fame as England's greatest sculptor, Epstein was drafted as a regular soldier.
